What is Carbon Footprint?

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Do you hear it but do not know what carbon footprint means?

Do greenhouses gases cause global warming?

Understanding carbon footprint will help our planet for future generations. There is no Planet B!

In this article we will discuss the following:

  • What is carbon footprint?

  • What are greenhouse gases?

  • How do greenhouse gases affect climate change?

  • What are the main contributors to carbon footprint?

What is Carbon Footprint?

Carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by a person, place, or thing. Carbon footprint represents the life cycle of a service or product. The life cycle includes the following:

  • material production

  • manufacturing

  • use

  • end of life

How can you reduce your carbon footprint? (answer at end of article)

  • Reduce

  • Reuse

  • Recycle

  • All of the above

What Are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse gas is gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are natural occurring gases in the atmosphere. However, human activity rapidly increases the release of greenhouse gases. The main greenhouse gases are as followed:

  • carbon dioxide (CO2)

  • methane (CH4)

  • nitrous oxide (N2O)

  • fluorinated gases

How Do Greenhouse Gases Affect Climate Change?

Understanding carbon footprint is important to our livelihood. With the rapid release of greenhouse gases, our planet’s temperature is affected. This is called global warming. Global warming is the gradual heating of the Earth’s temperature. When the Earth temperature rises it affects Earth’s climate system. This is called climate change. The effects of climate change have an impact on the following:

  • natural disaster frequency

  • temperature

  • agriculture

  • weather patterns

  • droughts

  • sea levels

What Are the Main Contributors to Carbon Footprint?

The main contributors to our carbon footprint are fossil fuels and agriculture. Fossil fuel use is the primary source of carbon dioxide. Live stock (agriculture) are the primary source of methane gas. Once these greenhouses gases are released, they can survive in the atmosphere from a few years to thousands of years.

Other important contributors to our carbon footprint are consumption and waste. Each product we buy has a carbon footprint. For instance, products made with paper originate from trees and trees are cut down from forest, causing deforestation. Consumption of products and goods are needed. However, overconsumption leads to waste. That waste is often turned into pollution. The major types of pollution are categorized as air, water, and land.

What is an Easy Way to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

An easy way to reduce your carbon footprint is reducing plastic bag use when possible. Plastic bags are hard to recycle and are huge contributors to land and water pollution. Using a reusable bag helps reduce the need for plastic bag. We have reusable tote bags available below.
